British Ship’s Logbook
| The entries in this book were made by W. Farquhar aboard St. Jean d’Acre. This is the blue-paged logbook issued by the Admiralty to all commissioned ships. In addition to daily reports of shipboard activities, it contains nine water-colored drawings of the ship, as well as ports and islands visited on the voyage. (At some point in his career, Farquhar transferred to the H.M.S. Trafalgar. We include a logbook entry from that time period, as well.) Included in St. Jean d’Acre’s logbook are two hand-drawn maps: one of the Mediterranean, the other of the coasts of Portugal, Spain, and NW Africa. The log entry begins on 31 July 1860 with: “At moorings in Malta Harbour...” RARE & UNUSUAL.

British Unit-Marked Ammunition Pouch for Martini-Henry .577/450-caliber Cartridges;
| The unit “G13" has been stenciled onto the bottom in white paint. This mark refers to the 13th Hussars, a light Dragoon unit in the British Army. The 13th Hussars was raised in 1715, and fought in many campaigns including the American Revolution (stationed in the West Indies). They also fought against Napoleon at Waterloo, took part in the “Charge of the Light Brigade” at Balaklava, fought in India and Afghanistan, and were then sent to South Africa, where they took part in the Zulu Campaigns and the Boer War. This pouch dates from the South Africa period, and was used in the Zulu wars. Since the 13th was a cavalry unit, they did not use the Martini rifle, but rather, the carbine, which was carried in a leather scabbard suspended from the saddle.
