Confederate Bible
First Bible Printed in Georgia

One of the lesser-known effects of the Civil War was a shortage of Bibles in the South. Lincoln's ban on commerce with the Confederacy included Bibles, and the Union blockade of the South meant the Confederacy was unable to import Bibles from England. The BIBLE SOCIETY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES was founded with the intent to supply Confederate soldiers with copies of the New Testament. These Bibles had to be small and light to allow the soldiers to carry them in a pocket or pack. They were printed in small numbers in 1862 and 1863. This New Testament is known as the first Bible printed in the state of Georgia. It is considered to be one of the rarest 19th-century American Bibles. This New Testament shows wear commensurate with its age and the acidic paper used in the mid 19th century. There is some loss on the pages where the paper has crumbled away; especially the first and last sections of the book. The last page is detached, but present. This example shows no indication that it ever had a cover (a cover, especially a hardback one, would have added to the size and weight thus making it less likely to be carried easily). We believe this New Testament was the property of Pvt. Samuel Davenport, Company C, 35th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteers, also known as the "Campbell County Rangers." Campbell County ceased to exist in the early 20th century when it became part of south Fulton County, now part of metropolitan Atlanta.
