Hopi "Peach" Basket |
| This is a bushel-sized Hopi wicker peach basket dating from about 1900, and measures 12 ½ inches high and 19 ½ inches in diameter. The early Spanish explorers and missionaries introduced the Hopi to peach-tree cultivation. These baskets were made to carry produce from the cultivated areas to the higher mesas, where they lived. Wicker baskets were made on the Third Mesa, also home to the oldest village in North America; believed to have been established in 1050 AD.
